Being a digital nomad in Bali, it’s a dream of many people and so understandable. Living in Bali makes me feel alive, free and incredibly happy. There are endless opportunities concerning restaurants, gyms, shops, nature and housing. It is super affordable, there are lots of like minded people, the food is amazing and you can be a tourist in your free time! Truly sounds like a dream right?
However, I can imagine it being a little overwhelming when visiting Bali for the first time or returning after a few years. What are the best areas to live in? What currency is there in Indonesia? How about transport? And you’ll probably have many more questions. Let me help you a little and read along if you want to know all my favorite places in Bali!
Where to live in Bali?
Canggu – I would say start your journey in Canggu. It is the place to be for digital nomads and super easy to connect with like minded people when coming alone to Bali. There are hundreds of hip cafes and restaurants and the vibe is just good.
The Bukit (Uluwatu & Bingin) – The Bukit is amazing when it comes to nature and beaches. All beaches are beautiful and have white sanded beaches and clear blue waters. It’s definitely a surfers paradise and becoming more popular but still more quiet than Canggu.
Ubud – If you want to experience the spiritual and cultural part of Bali I would absolutely advise you to live in Ubud. Ubud is surrounded by rice paddies and lush green nature. Plus it is yoga and vegan food heaven!
What currency is used in Bali?
The currency in Bali is called Indonesian Rupiah. It’s always a good idea to have some cash with you for little expenses, like a taxi or petrol. You can easily withdraw at an ATM. However, be cautious when you withdraw your money because the machine will first give you your money and AFTER that it will give your card back. This is different compared to other machines in Europe for example. A lot of people forget their cards because of this, so be careful!
Transport
I would definitely recommend hiring a scooter in Bali, but only if you feel safe and confident enough. Renting a bike is super cheap and it’s definitely the easiest way to get around. If you don’t feel comfortable you can download the Go-jek or Grab app, it is similar to Uber! You can just jump on the back of a motorbike or book a car, also super cheap!
